Freedom at the Barrel of a Gun

Yesterday, on a razor thin partisan vote , the Democrats in Congress endowed the American people with a new right.  Speaker Pelosi (D,CA) explained it this way;

“After a year of debate and hearing the calls of millions of Americans, we have come to this historic moment. Today we have the opportunity to complete the great unfinished business of our society and pass health insurance reform for all Americans that is a right and not a privilege.”

Interestingly, your new right comes with an army to enforce it.  Uncle Sam will hire 16,500 new IRS Agents to force citizens’ submission to this new right.  At the end of the day, you will be audited monthly by the IRS to ensure compliance with the freedom granted to you by the state.  Whereas with the Civil Rights act of 1964 the government’s role was to ensure that no person, group or entity denied Americans the rights provided in the bill, the Healthcare Reform Act of 2010 forces individuals to comply with the right that has been granted to them.

Our Founding Fathers had a different point of view.  It was their belief that rights were not created by the government, but rather granted to men by their Creator;

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

High minded thoughts such as those are no longer popular with those who reign over us.  Today we find that freedom comes from the barrel of a gun.
