And the Slime Shall Rise Again!

June 3, 2010

Nikkie Haley with her husband Michael and their kids.

The hate in South Carolina has turned from sexist to racist.

According to Palmetto State Politics;

Jake Knotts, state senator and Larry Richter buddy, called Nikki Haley a “raghead”

Michale Haley, the candidate’s husband, confirmed hearing the statement and responded on Twitter;

Politics in South Carolina keeps devolving lower and lower.

UPDATE: 6/3 8:50 – More from Ben Smith at Politico;

South Carolina Republicans were quick Thursday evening to condemn the remarks of a prominent Republican State Senator, Jake Knotts, who referred to a gubernatorial candidate as a “raghead” on an online political show today.

Knotts, a foe of Governor Mark Sanford and his protege, State Rep. Nikki Haley, made the remark of Haley on the local webcast PubPolitics.

Haley was born a Sikh, and the slur can refer to Arabs, Muslims, or those who — like Sikh men — wear turbans. She is a convert to Christianity.

UPDATE II: 6/4 7:00 – A little background from John O’Connor at the State.  Knotts called Haley a “raghead” on a podcast called Pub Politics (you might remember Pub Politics from a couple of pieces Stacy McCain did a few days back where Pub Politics had Will Folks on as a guest).  Pub Politics is exactly what it sounds like, bloggers and politicos sitting in a bar, drinking beer and talking politics.

It seems that after Knotts’ comments aired, the State Senator attempted the old “apologize” by reinforcing your comments trick;

“My ‘raghead’ comments about Obama and Haley were intended in jest… I apologize. I still believe Ms. Haley is pretending to be someone she is not, much as Obama did, but I apologize to both for an unintended slur.”

So, Knotts not only called Nikki Haley a “raghead”, he called President Obama a “raghead” as well.

I do not know what Haley should be more upset about, the racial slur, or the comparison to Barak Obama.  Either way, Knotts clearly believes that Haley is lying about her Christianity.  The problem for Knotts, career politicians only make hate filled, racist comments like that when their hearts are hate filled and racist.

Once again, South Carolina is national news and once again the politicians are making the Palmetto State look bad.

UPDATE III: 6/4/7:35 – Riehl World View’s Dan Riehl has the quote from Knotts;

“We already got one raghead in the White House, we don’t need a raghead in the governor’s mansion.”

Classy guy that Knotts.

UPDATE IV: 6/4 8:45 am – WOLO TV 25 in Columbia has video with Nikki Haley’s Reaction.

“This is dirty politics, this is what the people are tired of.”

At the Columbia Tea Party meeting, Nikki Haley was greeted with a standing ovation.

UPDATE V: 6/4 9:13 am – Will Folks issued the following statement regarding the “raghead” remark made by Jake Knotts on Wesley Donehue’s Pub Politics online program.

“I’m not part of that cabal. I have spent three years building Nikki Haley up and defending her against precisely these sorts of attacks. I didn’t ask to be targeted by Nikki’s enemies and when I was forced to tell the truth after two weeks of pure hell, I certainly didn’t ask to be smeared by Nikki’s supporters.

This whole thing is ugly and unfortunate for the people and families involved, but in my case the truth is what it is – and it’s coming out whether I like it or not. In the meantime, I refuse to be associated with Neanderthals like Jake Knotts or used car salesmen like Andre Bauer simply because it fits someone’s surface interpretation of events.

It is interesting that Folks disassociates himself from the “cabal”, but does not condemn the racist remark.

UPDATE VI: 6/4 8:25 pm – Stacy over at The Other McCain found more of the Pub Politics interview via the Columbia Free Press;

“She’s a raghead that’s ashamed of her religion trying to hide it behind being Methodist for political reasons. . . .
“This is Jakie Knotts trying to let the people know . . .
“This isn’t the first time I’ve said it . . . I’m not on a crusade to downgrade her, but if someone asks me I’ll tell ‘em. And look here, someone wants to vote for her knowing the truth, vote for her. . . .
“We need a good Christian to be our governor. . . She’s hiding her religion. She ought to be proud of it. I’m proud of my god.”

So if I am understanding this correctly, she’s bearing false witness and Knotts is the good Christian here?  Oh, come on, who are you peddling that garbage to you redneck, racist, s.o.b.?

The additional comments make Knotts’ “apology” ring extremely hollow.

Democrats in South Carolina are asking for Knotts’ resignation.

UPDATE VII: 6/7 1:00 – South Carolina Republicans are beginning to call for Knotts’ resignation, from the party as well as from office.

“South Carolina GOP Chairman Karen Floyd can take this step by immediately scheduling a press conference and formally asking Knotts to leave the Republican Party.  Kicking Knotts to the curb would be a bold move – signaling that the party means business when it comes the practice of accepting any type of behavior”

    What Sen. Knotts has not thought about yet is that if Rep. Haley loses this election for Governor it will be a sound bet that she will sell her house, move a mile into his district, and run against him in two years. He is so busy trying to protect his buddy the Lt. Governor that he has painted a bullseye on his back.

      Too bad she’s going to win, I’d like to see her take Knotts’ seat away.

    Katrina Shealy should have no problem beating “Good ol Boy” Jackey. Vote the establishment out and set up term limits.

    The only thing Michael Haley has to say is “I’ll be the first asking for his resignation”?

    No wonder Haley sleeps around on him…he’s got no balls. If it was my wife fatso slurred I’d be sure to feed his pig a** a knuckle sandwich and happily serve a night in jail.

    That being said, doesn’t the fat man remind you of a Vogon?

    • June 4, 2010 5:22 pm

      Yes, Knotts does look like a Vogon! Thanks for pointing that out

    What kind of reply would you need for it to be more clear he also condemns the remark? Seems kind of obvious to me. Like, “Duh.”
    Are you obtuse?

    • June 4, 2010 10:43 am

      Read it again! Will’s post was all about Will. He said that he is not part of the “cabal” and that he defended her against these sort of attacks, but he never condemned toe comment.

      Listen, Will knows politics and he knows how to handle a situation like this. “I condemn Knotts’ remarks.”

    Enjoy the blog, btw. Just a brief comment. South Carolina politics has always been the equivalent of an elementary school playground. We have been governed by a bunch of frat boys and affirmative action cases way back when my prostate stopped workin’. We have not had a real man (or woman for that matter) in our state legislature until Nikki and she is giving them hell. Good for her. Boss Hog Jake Knotts is a lowcountry hick who probably has a secret thing for small boys. His type want to go back to the good ‘ol cross-burnin’ days when things were much simpler and people knew their place.

    I don’t find our politics embarrassing at all. It is a reflection of us and our own ineptitude.

    Look, fat mans comments are outragious, but so is the reaction. If any of you think for a sec that his beliefs reflect the usual attitude in South Carolina, then you are as ignorant as he is. I havelive in quite a few states from one shore to the other and racism and ignorance is a part of every state, every color, every creed, every religion. South Carolina does not hold a monopoly on it and the majority of the people in SC detest it, period!

    And Jack, seen a ton more “hicks” and ignorant trailer trash upstate then in the lowcountry. From your comment, it is obvious you seldom get past the front porch on your shack and have no clue as to the make-up of this state, but try to not display your ignorance and stupidity for all to see next time.

      Hey MORON! Read the post before you make comments!

      My comments were directed at Knotts and his racist comments, not anyone else and certainly at the good people of South Carolina.

      South Carolina is an amazing state, filled with many of the best people. The good people of South Carolina deserve MUCH better than foul-mouthed, bigoted trash like Jake Knotts. And Will Folks. And Andre Bauer.

      The good people of South Carolina deserve a leader like Nikki Haley.

    My dear Timestop. My thesis covered the affects of reconstruction on South Carolina as a state and its long term impact. Since I have worn the hat of a professor in times past, please let me educate you in summary. (FYI- I have lived in 4 different states, Maine, PA-Penn State prof, SC and FL. I grew up in Australia, Europe and Africa–so I may have reached a little further from my porch than you, dear friend).

    Post Civil War no state faced harsher sanctions and reprisal from “reconstruction” than South Carolina did. Because of this, most people of “means” (socio-economic–which usually was a reflection of both native intellect and education) left the state. What remained were basically of two types: political/economic scoundrels/opportunists and people of poor “means”. The long range effect has been lower collective IQ scores, educational standards, and many other statistics that are associated with a largely two classed systems. Businesses locate in this state, not because of the unions, but because of its workers–usually good average folk who will work much cheaper and harder than other states. Many issues are linked to this.

    Our political system is largely a product of this, and our own inability or understanding in how to change it. Thats the reason we have senators like Jake.

    A pure summary of statistics available on our state websites attests that the upstate of South Carolina is more educationally focused than the rest of the state-I’ll allow you to do that research yourself.

    Sure, ignorance is rampant within the borders of the U.S. but S.C. holds many prestigious statistics that set it apart from the rest. (in the lowest educationally, the highest in unemployment, rape/incest/teen pregnancy, lack of technical industry, etc)

    Timestop, you may consider your circle the “majority”–but if you do you live in quite a small world in comparison to most. Just because many are outraged over an issue here and there, doesn’t mean they have the mental capacity to do anything about it.

    I’ll try not to display any more “stupidity and ignorance for all to see” next time.

    Regards,

    Jack

    Mike is a pretty strong fellow. Too darned bad duelling’s illegal. I’d pay to see that one.

    The human debris are showing their true colors as they panic over a double-digit lead.

    In the words of Lady Thatcher, “Stop the rot, sack the lot!” I pray she wins. These fratboyish clowns disguised as politicians have to go.

      Mike’s in a tough spot, but I think he is handling it well. Governor Nikki will set that place straight.
